Total Body Photography
  • In a separate Total Body Photography appointment, we photograph your entire skin surface and all your moles.
  • The photography technology creates a record of your skin from various viewpoints (in your underwear).
  • At your skin check, your doctor reviews the images and uses them as a baseline at follow-ups to spot changes.
  • In addition to reviewing the images, your doctor examines you head to toe with a dermatoscope.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is total body photography?

Total body photography involves taking a series of high-resolution photographs of the entire skin surface, including areas that are difficult to see or reach. The purpose of this type of photography is to detect early signs of skin cancer and other skin conditions.

How does total body photography help with skin cancer detection?

Total body photography allows doctors to closely monitor changes in the skin over time as it identifies the most subtle changes in the size, shape, or colour of moles or other skin lesions. By comparing images from different time periods, doctors can detect even subtle changes that may be indicative of skin cancer.

Who is a good candidate for total body photography?

Total body photography is highly recommended for individuals with a history of skin cancer, a family history of skin cancer, or a large number of moles or atypical moles.

How often should I have total body photography?

The frequency of total body photography will vary depending on your risk factors for skin cancer. People at high risk may need to have total body photography done every 6 to 12 months, while those at lower risk may only need to have it done every 2 to 3 years.

Is total body photography covered by Medicare?

Total body photography is currently not covered by Medicare and is an additional service to your skin cancer check. It requires the use of advanced technology and a skilled professional to take the pictures of you in a separate appointment. Your doctor will assess your skin cancer risk and advise the best care plan for you. You will still get a Medicare rebate for your full skin cancer check.

Is total body photography painful or invasive?

Total body photography is a non-invasive procedure that involves taking photographs of the skin. There is no pain involved.
