Associate Professor of Skin Cancer Medicine, University of New South Wales
John Pyne is an Associate Professor of Skin Cancer Medicine at the University of New South Wales. His initial medical and surgical training was at the University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital including the Melanoma Unit. He later completed a Master of Medicine degree (Skin Cancer Medicine) at The University of Queensland. Professor Pyne then held the position of Program Director for the Skin Cancer Masters from 2007 until 2013. He also has been conferred with a PhD on the correlations between dermoscopy and histopathology for basal and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. Professor Pyne is also a Fellow and past President of the Skin Cancer College of Australasia.
Professor Pyne’s main professional interest is in the early diagnosis of skin cancer using correlations between optical imaging and histopathology. This interest is applied to patients using dermoscopy (low power optical magnification) or a confocal scanning microscope (high power imaging). Confocal scans a skin cancer in three dimensions and enables a biopsy to be performed without surgery in suitable cases.
