Photodynamic therapy

This treatment is currently only available at New Town Skin Cancer Centre.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment for various skin conditions including superficial skin cancers, acne, rosacea and actinic keratoses (sun spots). A topical cream is applied to the skin which is then exposed to a special light source, triggering a chemical reaction in the targeted lesions that eventually breaks down their structure.

20180430_142825There are three steps to PDT, which can take a few hours to complete:

  • the medicated cream is applied
  • the cream reacts with your skin
  • your skin is exposed to the light source

The technique causes damaged skin cells to be destroyed and bacteria to become inactive, while the healthy skin remains unharmed.
