Frequently asked questions

Can skin cancer look like a blood blister?

Yes, skin cancer sometimes appears like a lesion that won't heal, including blood blisters and pimples. If you have any unusual lesions on your body that stand out from the rest, or if a lesion is not going away on its own after several weeks or months, it's essential to get it assessed by a doctor. Typically, melanoma will show one of the ABCD signs: Asymmetry, irregular Border, multiple Colours, or Diameter larger than 6mm.

Where can I find a skin cancer clinic in Caloundra?

Caloundra Skin Cancer Centre on the Sunshine Coast is conveniently located opposite Stockland Shopping Centre. Limited parking is available at the rear of the clinic, just off Omrah Avenue. There is also parking available in surrounding streets and across the road in the Stockland Shopping Centre car park (entry via Bowman Road). If you're taking public transport, the nearest bus stop is on the other side of the shopping centre at First Ave near Mayes Ave.

What does skin cancer look like when it first starts?

Early melanomas are usually very small (less than 1mm) and have not yet spread to other areas of the body such as the lymph nodes or other organs. Melanoma typically stands out as looking different from the rest of the lesions on your skin and often shows one of the ABCD signs: Asymmetry, irregular Border, multiple Colours, or Diameter larger than 6mm. Non-melanoma skin cancers such as squamous or basal cell carcinomas can appear as a scaly red patch on sun-exposed areas of the skin, an open sore that won't heal, a rough or thick patch of irritated skin, a raised growth, or even a blister. They can become crusty and easily bleed. Early skin cancers may show no symptoms at all, which is why regular professional skin checks are so important.

What are the signs that melanoma has spread?

In its advanced stages, melanoma of the skin can spread to other organs of the body and become fatal. Some early signs of spreading include hard or swollen lymph nodes, pain, feeling tired or unwell, weight loss, yellow eyes and skin, stomach pain, and more. The good news is that melanoma is usually curable if detected early, before it can spread, which is why regular professional skin checks are so important.

What can be mistaken for skin cancer?

Skin cancer can sometimes look like a blister, pimple, ulcer, a sore that won't heal, a scar, a patch of irritated skin, or it can be mistaken for a benign freckle. The best way to determine if a lesion is cancerous is by having it assessed by a doctor.
