Looking after your skin health this Movember

Movember is an annual event in which men grow out their moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, including mental health, prostate cancer, and other common conditions affecting men such as skin cancer.

Skin cancer in Australian men

Skin cancer is the most common cancer affecting Australian men. In fact, Aussie men are twice as likely as women to be diagnosed with skin cancer and account for 67 per cent of skin cancer deaths.

Sadly, men are also less likely to see their doctor and less vigilant about skin cancer checks, which can result in late diagnoses and deadlier outcomes.

We conducted an online survey of Aussie men and found that 79 per cent haven't had a skin check this year.

Why are men more likely to get skin cancer?

Men are more likely to work outdoors where they are exposed to the sun's UV rays, which is the major cause of skin cancer. Men are also less likely to wear sun protection like sunscreen and see their doctor for regular skin checks, so skin cancer is sometimes picked up later.
