Sun safety made easier with Bakslap

National Skin Cancer Centres (NSCC) has signed a major distribution agreement with Sunshine Coast-developed Bakslap, which will see the innovative sunscreen applicator available at our 21 skin cancer centres across Australia.

Bakslap founder Raphael McGowan said the deal was a major achievement as the applicator would reach a broader market while being supported by one of Australia’s leading networks of skin cancer clinics.

"This is a fantastic outcome for Bakslap, as NSCC are Australia’s leading experts in skin cancer medicine, providing skin cancer checks with imaging technology, surgical and non-surgical treatments of skin cancer, and wound and scar management with LED light therapy.

"I’m really thrilled to have the Bakslap applicator available at each NSCC reception across Australia as it will play a part in reinforcing sun safety and helping people prevent skin cancers.

"I recently had a check-up at NSCC’s Sunshine Coast Skin Cancer Centre in Birtinya and I could not have been more impressed by the knowledge and support of Professor David Wilkinson and his team.

"Professor Wilkinson is incredibly knowledgeable about skin cancer with a strong passion for identifying early melanomas, reducing patients’ risk and helping patients to be alert to moles which may newly appear or change.

"While Bakslap plays an important role in helping people apply lotion in difficult to reach areas of the body, NSCC provides each patient with an entire body scan via brand new photography technology (Total Body Photography) which is saved in the database and compared at future skin checks to ensure any changes are caught early, when chances of successful treatment are best," Raphael said.

Bakslap was created by Raphael on the Sunshine Coast in 2017 following the death of his sister Tess who was diagnosed with inoperable melanoma in the middle of her back. She subsequently passed away in 2012.

“I didn’t want Tess’s death to be in vain and after doing a lot of fundraising and research, we found that getting sunburn on your back is the most at-risk place for developing fatal melanoma.

“I wanted to create something that could start a conversation and create awareness around skin cancer and melanoma, and Bakslap is the result of years of research and planning to address this significant national health issue.”

Over the past five years, Bakslap has increased its distribution to 124 outlets including pharmacies, retail shops and skin cancer centres across most states. The applicator is also sold in Singapore, Canada, New Zealand and the USA.
