Dr Delfin Sansom

Skin Cancer Doctor at New Town Skin Cancer & Skin Repair Centre

MBBS, MMed (Skin Cancer), Prof Dip Skin Cancer Surgery, DCH, FRACGP, ACCD, ACCSCMS, Cert Dermoscopy, Cert Skin Cancer Medicine

Dr Delfin Sansom graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2011. He worked at the Royal Hobart Hospital as a junior doctor for two years then worked at Western Health in Victoria for a year. Having decided he would focus on his area of interest - skin cancer medicine - he went on to complete his Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners with extended skills in skin cancer.

Dr Sansom is a Fellow and Certified Skin Cancer Doctor with the Skin Cancer College of Australasia – the only Fellow of the College working in Tasmania. He completed a master’s degree in Skin Cancer with academic excellence from The University of Queensland in 2020. He holds several advanced postgraduate qualifications in skin cancer medicine, surgery and dermoscopy, and has been involved with research projects and the SCARD skin cancer surgical audit. He completed a placement with renowned skin cancer surgeon Dr Con Pappas and has assisted plastic surgeons in Hobart.

Dr Sansom is passionate about providing the gold standard of skin cancer care. During his work as a Skin Cancer Doctor since 2015 (during which he co-founded his own skin cancer clinic), he has worked across several skin cancer services in greater Hobart, offering skin cancer screening and the full array of treatments available for the treatment of skin cancer, including non-surgical modalities and surgical treatments, including for complex cases. Dr Sansom’s skin cancer practice involves assessment through skin checks, dermatoscopy and the use of digital imaging systems, and he strives to care for patients in a single skin cancer service, limiting the need for hospital referral where appropriate.

We have a high burden of skin cancer medicine in Australia - and Tasmania, despite being considered 'the colder state' is no exception to the rule. Very early in his medical practice in Hobart, Dr Sansom acknowledged the amount of skin cancers he was seeing and identified it as an area on which he would like to focus. Early detection and treatment of skin cancer can be lifesaving, and early treatment can limit the burden of treatment required. He finds it rewarding to help his patients care for their skin long term, identifying any new lesions early and treating with the least invasive techniques possible.

Dr Sansom is interested in teaching and training medical students and colleagues. He has been involved with the University of Tasmania medical program as a tutor and examiner. He is currently a GP supervisor for General Practice Training Tasmania. He regularly attends the ICON cancer service multidisciplinary team meeting and has been a presenter at this setting.
